Delivering Dog Safety Education for SEND Pupils at New Focus Education

Bark Smart recently visited New Focus Education, a specialist school supporting pupils with additional needs, delivering a tailored session focused on dog safety education for SEND pupils. The session was carefully designed to meet the individual needs of the students while ensuring key safety messages were clearly understood.

Why Dog Safety Education for SEND Pupils Requires a Different Approach

Delivering dog safety education in specialist settings requires a considered and adaptive approach. Communication must be clear, pacing must be carefully managed and key messages must be reinforced in a way that is both accessible and engaging. Within SEND environments, it is essential that learning is structured in a way that allows pupils to process information comfortably and confidently.

At New Focus Education, the session focused on delivering simple, consistent principles around SEND dog safety. Rather than overwhelming pupils with information, the emphasis was placed on clarity, repetition and real-life understanding. This allowed each child to engage with the session at their own pace while building meaningful awareness around children and dogs safety.

Building Confidence Through Dog Safety Education for SEND Pupils

A central part of the session involved helping pupils recognise when a dog may need space, understand basic body language and develop calm, safe behaviours. These are fundamental skills within any Bark Smart programme, but they are particularly important within specialist school settings where confidence levels can vary.

One of the most significant outcomes of the session was the visible increase in confidence among the pupils. Some children began feeling unsure or cautious around dogs, but as their understanding developed, so too did their confidence. By the end of the session, several pupils were able to safely engage with the dog in a calm and controlled way, demonstrating not only knowledge but practical application of dog safety education for SEND pupils.

The Primary Lead at New Focus Education commented on the session, stating that the programme was “engaging, accessible and highly valuable for our pupils,” highlighting the way the session was adapted to meet individual needs while still delivering clear and consistent safety messages.

A highlight of the sessionWatching a child with SEN and SEMH, who has been previously bitten and was extremely wary and nervous of the dogs, grow in confidence to follow the safe around dog instruction and come from the back of the room to meet and sit with the dogs, shows just how good and beneficial this workshop is”.

The Importance of Specialist School Dog Education

This shift in confidence highlights the wider importance of specialist school dog education. The aim of the Bark Smart programme is not simply to deliver information, but to create lasting behavioural change that children can apply in everyday situations.

Every child, regardless of their needs or abilities, should have access to education that helps them stay safe around dogs. By delivering structured, accessible and engaging sessions, Bark Smart ensures that SEND pupils are given the same opportunities to learn, understand and build confidence.

Sessions like this reinforce the importance of adapting delivery methods while maintaining consistent safety messaging. Dog safety education for SEND pupils is not a variation of the programme, it is an essential part of ensuring that all children are protected and supported.
