Teaching Life Skills That Last Beyond the Classroom

Understanding how to behave around dogs is an essential life skill for children, especially with so many families now owning dogs.

That’s why we were delighted to visit Handforth Grange Primary School, delivering our Bark Smart dog safety programme to pupils in a fun, engaging, and practical way.

Bringing Learning to Life

Rather than a traditional classroom lesson, Bark Smart workshops are designed to be fully interactive and memorable.

At Handforth Grange, pupils didn’t just listen, they took part, asked questions, and experienced real-life scenarios that helped bring the learning to life.

The energy in the room was fantastic, and the pupils showed great enthusiasm throughout.

Deputy Head Miss Butterworth said "Children were engaged throughout the session and left beaming with pride with their Bark

Smart certificates"

Real Dogs, Real Understanding

A key part of the session is introducing pupils to our trained Bark Smart dogs in a safe and controlled environment.

This allows children to:

  • See dog behaviour in real time

  • Understand boundaries and respect

  • Build calm and confident interactions

For many pupils, this was the highlight of the day.

Key Lessons Pupils Took Away

By the end of the workshop, pupils had developed a stronger understanding of:

  • How to recognise different dog behaviours

  • Why dogs need space and shouldn’t always be approached

  • Safe ways to interact with dogs at home and outside

  • What to do if they feel unsure around a dog

These are simple but powerful lessons that can help prevent incidents and keep both children and dogs safe.

Why Dog Safety Education Matters More Than Ever

With increasing dog ownership across the UK, educating children on safe interaction is more important than ever.

Programmes like Bark Smart help schools:

  • Promote safety and awareness

  • Reduce the risk of dog-related incidents

  • Support children’s confidence and wellbeing
