Real Learning, Real Impact at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School
There’s something powerful about seeing children truly understand how to behave around dogs, not just being told, but experiencing it.
That’s exactly what happened during our recent visit to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Kirkham, Lancashire, where we delivered our Bark Smart dog safety workshop to pupils across the school.
From the very first session, it was clear this was going to be a special day.
A Proud Moment – Boomer’s Return
For the Bark Smart team, this visit carried extra meaning.
It marked the return of Boomer, one of our much-loved dogs, who has been recovering. Seeing him back, calm, confident, and doing what he does best, helping children learn, it was a proud moment for everyone involved.
The pupils instantly connected with him, and he played a key role in bringing the learning to life.
Turning Knowledge Into Real-Life Skills
What makes Bark Smart different is that children don’t just sit and listen, they take part.
At St Joseph’s, pupils were guided through real-life scenarios that helped them understand:
How dogs communicate through body language
Why giving dogs space is so important
How to approach a dog safely and calmly
What to do if they feel unsure or uncomfortable
The sessions are designed to be interactive, memorable, and practical, helping children build confidence in a safe environment.
From Learning to Doing

Each session builds towards the moment pupils meet the dogs.
This is where everything comes together, children apply what they’ve learned in a calm, structured setting, supported by our team.
For many pupils, this is the highlight of the day, and it’s where we often see real understanding click into place.
Why Dog Safety Education Matters in Today’s World
With more families across Kirkham, Lancashire, and the wider North West owning dogs, it’s never been more important for children to understand how to interact with them safely.
Many incidents happen not through aggression, but through misunderstanding. That’s why education is key.
Bark Smart exists to help prevent dog bites and build safer relationships between children and dogs, starting in schools.
A School That Truly Engaged

The pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School were fantastic throughout. They were engaged, respectful, and eager to learn.
Staff feedback highlighted how valuable the sessions were, particularly in helping children recognise when a dog may feel uncomfortable and how to respond appropriately.
It’s this level of engagement that makes the biggest difference long term.
Supporting Schools Across Kirkham and Lancashire
Following our visit to St Joseph’s, we continue to work with schools across Kirkham, Lancashire, and surrounding areas, delivering dog safety workshops for primary schools that are both educational and impactful.
Each workshop is tailored to suit the needs of the school and its pupils.
